Job Description
Graphic designers use illustrative, sound, visual and multimedia techniques to convey a message for information, entertainment, advertising, promotion or publicity purposes, and create special visual effects and animations for computer games, film, interactive and other media.
Entry Requirements
- Entrants have usually completed a foundation course, a BTEC/SQA award, a degree and/or postgraduate qualification.
- NVQs/SVQs in Design (in various disciplines) are available at Levels 2 and 3.
- Portfolio work is also important for entry.
- Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, or related field (or equivalent work experience).
- Proven experience as a Graphic Designer, with a strong portfolio showcasing a range of design work.
- Proficiency in industry-standard design software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).
- Excellent knowledge of typography, color theory, and layout design principles.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to work efficiently under tight deadlines.
- Creative thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Good communication skills and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
- Knowledge of print production processes is a plus.
- Experience with video editing or animation is a bonus.
Tasks Required
- Liaises with client to clarify aims of project brief, discusses media, software and technology to be used, establishes timetable for project and defines budgetary constraints;
- undertakes research into project, considers previous related projects and compares costs of using different processes;
- prepares sketches, scale drawings, models, colour schemes and other mock-ups to show clients and discusses any required alterations;
- prepares specification and instructions for realisation of the project;
- liaises with other parts of the production team to ensure graphic design fits with other elements, processes and timescales;
- Create visually appealing graphics, illustrations, and layouts for various marketing materials, including brochures, flyers, posters, digital advertisements, social media content, and promotional materials.
- Ensure that all design work aligns with the company's brand guidelines, maintaining a consistent and professional visual identity.
- Produce engaging digital content, such as website graphics, email templates, and social media visuals, to enhance online presence and user experience.
- Collaborate with print vendors and ensure that print-ready files are prepared correctly for high-quality production of marketing collateral.
- Source and edit images to be used in marketing materials, ensuring high-quality and relevance.
- Contribute to brainstorming and concept development sessions to generate innovative design ideas for marketing campaigns.
- Stay up-to-date with industry trends, competitor designs, and emerging design technologies to maintain a competitive edge.
Salary per Annum: £23000
Salary per Hour: £11.79
